Robert Zemeckis asked that we bring the time machine down to the set of his latest movie. He also asked that Bob Gale be invited knowing what a kick he’d get out of it. Simon Wells put the meeting together and eventually the day was upon us.
Having been given a tour of the set (my first experience with motion capture). Bob Gale had already arrived so Simon brought us to video village to meet Bob Z and the rest of the crew. Bob turned to Simon and asked “Is the thing here?” to which Simon nodded and said, it’s right outside. Bob then announced that the company was breaking for lunch and everyone was to come outside for a big surprise... “the DeLorean from Back to the Future is here.”
A long walk out the hallway shooting the shit with Bob Gale and a turn around the bend and Bob Z’s mouth dropped... “Is that it?” he asked. “Uh, huh.” Sean replied. Bob Z was blown away telling us that he hadn’t seen the car in 20 years. Bob Gale attends all the DeLorean Car Shows and has seen next to all the conversions out there, but Bob Z was truly blown away. “Turn it on, Bob!” said Simon from the sidelines. “I don’t know how.” he replied hesitantly. “Just like the movie.” I said. Bob turned to me, half comically, half serious... “I never turned it on, I don’t know how it works.”
